Abstract or project description

Commotio cordis is a sudden cardiac arrest caused by a blunt, non-penetrating impact to the chest, occurring in the absence of structural cardiac injury. Most commonly affecting young athletes, it represents a unique electrophysiological phenomenon triggered by chest trauma during a vulnerable phase of the cardiac cycle, leading to lethal arrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation. Despite growing awareness, Commotio Cordis remains a challenging clinical entity due to its unpredictable nature and the need for immediate intervention. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the condition along with the mechanical, cellular, and molecular mechanisms underlying the arrhythmogenesis. We further explore the emerging risk factors, outline diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation, and evaluate current strategies for prevention and acute management. Furthermore, we discuss ongoing research efforts and future directions aimed at improving recognition, risk stratification, and outcomes. Our review seeks to integrate current knowledge while identifying critical areas for continued investigation in the prevention and treatment of Commotio Cordis.
