Abstract or project description
This paper examines social media companies' extensive surveillance of users' data and concerns about user privacy and data protection. Understanding how social media companies surveil users is crucial to understanding privacy implications and potential data misuse. This study presents a quantitative analysis of social media privacy perceptions and behavioral intentions among 127 participants collected via Google Forms survey during August-September 2023, with 63% of respondents above age 17. The sample comprised 48.8% female and 48.8% male participants, predominantly young adults (40.2% aged 18-24, 37.0% under 18). Using chi-square tests of independence and descriptive analysis, we investigated relationships between privacy concerns, demographic factors, and platform deletion behaviors. Results revealed high surveillance awareness: 72.4% believed their activities are being monitored. Among those above 17, 51.2% were partially worried about their information being sold by social media companies, while 11% were extremely or very worried. Overall, 50.4% reported being partially worried, 22.0% worried, and 16.5% not worried at all. Behavioral responses were substantial, with 68.5% having deleted or considering deleting platforms due to privacy concerns. Statistical analysis revealed significant gender differences in privacy worry levels (χ²(8)=21.091, p=.007, V=0.228). The association between worry and deletion intention approached significance (p=.088), suggesting privacy concerns predict protective actions. Age showed no significant association with worry, contradicting stereotypes about digital natives' indifference to privacy. These findings challenge assumptions about generational privacy indifference and support targeted interventions addressing gender-specific concerns. To conclude, while social media companies have harnessed technology for surveillance, balancing benefits and risks is crucial for responsible and ethical use of these platforms.
