How does the COVID-19 virus impact individuals' brain health?

This literature review evaluates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, both through viral infection and disruption of daily life, cognitive outcomes (memory, attention, and processing speed), and neurological disease progression. Through analysis of recent imaging studies, longitudinal research, and healthcare data, the review concludes that identifiable structural and functional brain abnormalities are caused by direct viral invasion, social isolation, and a lack of medical care. Particularly in susceptible groups, these alterations often show up as increasing dementia, reduced attention, neurocognitive symptoms, and permanent memory loss. In order to provide solutions that enhance neurocognitive well-being and equip communities for upcoming public health concerns, this review concludes with recommendations for further research, highlighting the necessity of longitudinal, lifetime studies and multi-sector collaboration.
