Summary
The debate between natural remedies and pharmaceutical treatments has been a prevalent topic, particularly in the field of dermatology. This review examines the effectiveness of natural remedies in treating common skin conditions, including acne, eczema, wounds, and signs of aging. Using databases like PubMed and Google Scholar, studies from 2000 to 2024 were analyzed. Findings highlight the benefits of various natural compounds for their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. They also describe the potential of natural treatments as alternatives to pharmaceutical treatments, particularly for their ability to reduce acne lesions, soothe inflammation in eczema, accelerate wound healing, decrease signs of aging, and improve overall skin texture. These treatments, such as natural oils, herbal plants, and antioxidant-rich compounds, are especially beneficial for individuals with sensitive skin and mild to moderate dermatological conditions. Additionally, natural remedies are frequently portrayed in the media as “safer” and “purer” alternatives to pharmaceuticals, which can shape consumer perceptions and drive their popularity. While these remedies are frequently preferred for minimal side effects and a holistic approach, issues such as inconsistent formulations and limited scientific research remain. Ultimately, this review promotes a balanced perspective, calling for additional research to be done to optimize the integration of natural and pharmaceutical approaches in dermatological care. Furthermore, insufficient evidence supports the long-term benefits and consequences of applying these natural treatments to the skin, raising concerns about their safety and efficacy over extended periods.
