Summary

For centuries, scientists and artists have been captivated by music’s complex interplay of sound waves and harmonic structures. While physiological research has advanced our understanding of music’s emotional effects, the precise mechanisms by which harmonic frequencies influence human emotion remain only partially understood. This paper investigates the interdisciplinary relationship between acoustics, auditory perception, and digital sound manipulation, offering new insights into how harmonic structures shape emotional responses. By integrating psychoacoustics with mathematical tools such as the Fourier Transform, the study examines how harmonic content is encoded by the auditory system, interpreted by the brain, and manipulated through digital technologies. The findings suggest applications in music production, therapeutic sound design, and emotionally adaptive audio systems.

Project review

“The overall organization and structure of the program exceeded my expectations. I was really impressed with how user-friendly the whole thing was, I had access to everything at all times. Shared tools and documents really helped me stay on track throughout the project.”

About my mentor

“Working with Chloris was a really positive experience. From the beginning, she understood exactly where I wanted to go with my project and gave me the tools and guidance I needed to get there. We were surprisingly similar in a lot of ways, which made it easier to communicate and stay in track and motivated. Her feedback was always thoughtful and encouraging, and she helped me break down the project in a way that felt manageable and exciting.”
